What Gauge Metal Roofing Should I Use?

The answer is more nuanced than “go thicker.” Gauge, grade, and what's behind the panel all matter.

If you've spent any time searching “what gauge metal roofing should I use,” you've probably seen the same advice repeated over and over: go thicker. A 24-gauge panel is better than a 26-gauge panel, and 26 beats 28. More metal, more strength — right?

Not exactly. Gauge matters, but it's not the whole story. In fact, two of the panels we roll every day in Westfield, MA — our 28-gauge Tuff Rib Ag and our 24-gauge Standing Seam — are four gauges apart, and both are exactly what their jobs call for. Here's why.

First, what does “gauge” actually mean?

Gauge is simply a measurement of steel thickness — and the numbering is counterintuitive: the lower the number, the thicker the metal. So 24 gauge is thicker than 26 gauge, which is thicker than 28 gauge.

That's the part most people know. The part most online answers leave out is that there's more than one way to measure a piece of steel. Thickness is only half the story.

Gauge vs. grade: hard steel vs. soft steel

The other half is grade, which describes the hardness — the strength — of the steel itself, not how thick it is.

Here's the key point: a 28-gauge panel can do its job because it's made from much harder steel, while a 24-gauge panel uses softer steel that needs the extra thickness to hold its shape. Put simply:

  • Grade 80 steel — hard. Tuff Rib Ag (28 gauge), Textured Tuff Rib Ag (26 gauge), and Commercial PBR (26 gauge) are all Grade 80. That's a very hard, tempered, strong steel. Because these profiles have relatively gentle bends, the hard metal can be roll formed without cracking — and that hardness lets us use a slightly thinner gauge while still getting full strength.
  • Grade 50 steel — soft. The Standing Seam panels — Snap Lock and Nail Flange, both 24 gauge — use Grade 50, a softer steel. The reason is practical: standing seam profiles have much sharper bends, and sharp bends require a softer metal so it doesn't crack when it's formed. The trade-off is that softer metal deforms a little more readily (say, underfoot), so it uses a thicker gauge to keep its shape.

So a 24-gauge Standing Seam panel isn't “better” than a 28-gauge Tuff Rib Ag panel because it's thicker. They're engineered for different profiles, with different steel, and each gauge is matched to its job. Thicker isn't automatically better — the right gauge for the right profile is.

The biggest factor: what's behind the panel

If gauge and grade are two parts of the equation, the biggest one is what's supporting the panel. The substructure — purlin spacing, or plywood — determines the loads each panel has to carry, and that's what really sets the requirements for a given profile.

Here's our guidance, by profile:

Tuff Rib Ag and Textured Tuff Rib Ag. On roof installs, our manufacturer spec is purlins no more than 24 inches on center (16 inches on center or closer is fine, too). These panels can also be installed directly onto plywood, which supports them very well. On vertical and sidewall applications, purlin spacing can open up to 36 inches on center.

Standing Seam (Snap Lock and Nail Flange). For both standing seam profiles, the manufacturer recommendation is plywood — ½" or ⅝" is typical in this region. On the 24-gauge Snap Lock specifically, an acceptable alternative is purlins at 16 inches on center.

Commercial PBR. This is the heavy-duty profile. In roof applications, purlins may be up to 48 inches apart; in sidewall and vertical applications, up to 72 inches — a full six feet.

The honest bottom line

The next time you hear “just go thicker,” you now know why that advice is oversimplified. Gauge matters, but so does grade — the hardness of the steel — and above all, what's supporting the panel. A 28-gauge panel on a properly framed structure will outperform a thicker panel on the wrong substructure any day of the week.
